Standing Up for Change
Standing Up for Equality

Stand Up Events Melbourne Inc. is a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to fighting sexual and gender discrimination in Australian sport. Since our launch in 2015, we've made significant strides, but the journey is far from over.

We partnered with Monash University for groundbreaking research on homophobia in male-dominated sports. This research led to the development of tailored preventative programs, implemented with the help of current AFL players, at grassroots sporting clubs.

Our ongoing mission is to create safe and inclusive environments for everyone, regardless of sexuality or gender. Sport, and life, should be for everyone.
Beyond our research and programs, we drive awareness and inspire change through speaking events and collaborations with sporting clubs, companies, and schools

We Partnered with Monash University

Stand Up Events collaborated with Monash University to conduct groundbreaking research on changing homophobic behaviour in youth sports. We worked closely with Monash to develop and test effective preventative programs, sharing our findings globally. Our collaboration involved experts from the Behaviour Science Laboratory, the School of Education, and BehaviourWorks at Monash.

Nearly a dozen Monash researchers contributed to the project, and we received guidance from international experts at Penn State University and the University of Warwick. The research is complete, providing crucial insights that will drive our mission for change.

You can read the research or explore the digital program that supported this change below.

The Stand Up Events program provides insight into what the actual issues are at hand and highlights the challenges the LGBTIQ+ community face. It is my belief there is a real need for programs like this in sport and especially local sporting clubs to help with the challenges faced around homophobic and discriminatory behaviours. The Stand Up program has been extremely beneficial from a personal level and more broadly for my local sporting club.

Harry Hill

Old Brighton Football Club

I was very moved by Angie's presentation at our school's Pride Week assembly. She spoke passionately and was unequivocal about her support for the LGBTIQA+ community. I think it was especially important for students and staff to learn of her personal connection to the cause and why the role of an ally is so vital. I appreciated the fact that Angie provided facts and statistics about the effects of homophobia and transphobia but also provided staff and students with clear actions that we could take in order to foster an inclusive community full of warmth, love and humanity.

Having worked with Angie over the last four years through our work with Stand Up Events, one of her greatest strengths is her connection with people.

Through Angie’s guest speaking appearances with both internal and external audiences, she has shown such an ability to engage with people from all walks of life, ensuring equality and care at the forefront of everything she does, making her so relatable to her audience.  Angie approaches her work with Stand Up Events with so much respect, transparency and is void of any judgment to truly nurture while fostering an environment that is conducive to learning and growing.

Collingwood FC

I first heard Angie present when I was a player at the Melbourne football club several years ago. She bravely shared her story which gave context to her passion for the space. Angie talked about the importance of inclusive environments and in particular the significance of language and how the words you use can impact those around you. The presentation had an immediate impact on the behaviour of the group and the self awareness I began to learn has stuck with me until today.

Stand Up Events CEO Angie Greene, raised in a professional sporting Victorian family, witnessed firsthand the challenges faced by queer individuals to assimilate with and in mainstream sports. Inspired by her friends and a close family member, Angie founded Stand Up Events with a clear purpose: to confront unacceptable behaviour and language in professional and amateur sports, creating a safe and inclusive environment for all, free from discrimination.
